Brewster (spr. Bruhster), David, geb. um 1785 in Schottland, war früher Apotheker, dann Secretär der Königlichen Gesellschaft in Edinburg, Erfinder des Kaleidoskops u. stellte sich bes. die Krystalllehre zur Aufgabe. Er wurde seiner Verdienste halber zum Baronet erhoben; er schr.: Lettres on natural magic, Lond. 1831; Life of Js. Newton, 1832 (deutsch von Goldberg, 1833); Treatise on optics, 1832 (deutsch von Hartmann, 1835); er ist Herausgeber von The Edinburgh encyclopaedia, 1808 ff., The Edinb. journal u. Mitherausgeber von The Edinb. philosophical journal.
