Gallīnae

Gallīnae (Hühner, Scharrvögel), Ordnung der Vögel, Schnabelgrund u. Nasenklappen fest u. hart, Schneiden des Oberkiefers übergreifend, Hinterzehe höher stehend als die vorderen, diese geheftet, Läufe lang, stark, Flügel kurz, Flug schwer; am Kopfe oft nackte Hautstellen; trinken schöpfend, fressen meist Körner, doch auch Insecten u. Würmer, leben meist in Polygamie u. nur das Weibchen brütet. Hierher gehören die Familien Sandhühner (Syrrapt idae), Hühner (Gallinaceae) u. Halb- od. Steißhühner (Crypturideae); viele Naturforscher zählen auch die Tauben in diese Ordnung.
