Gorkum

Gorkum (Gorinchem), 1) Bezirk in der niederländischen Provinz Südholland; 35,000 Ew. 2) feste Stadt darin, an der Merwe u. Linge, Tabakspfeifenfabriken, Lachsfang; 9000 Ew. – G. entstand durch die Bewohner des Fischerdorfes Wolfort, welches die Bewohner auf Befehl der Herren von Arkel verließen u. sich um deren neugebautes Schloß niederließen. Die Leute hießen wegen ihrer Armuth Ghorkens, u. daher soll der Name G. entstanden sein. Es wurde 1572 von den Geusen belagert u. genommen; am 20. Febr. 1814 ergab es sich den Alliirten.
