Optimātes (lat., Bestgesinnte), 1) im alten Rom die Conservativen, welche die alte republikanische [322] Verfassung aufrecht erhalten wissen wollten, im Gegensatz zu der Bewegungspartei (Populares); der Kampf zwischen beiden begann mit dem Auftreten der beiden Gracchen u. dauerte bis zur Kaiserzeit; 2) die herrschenden Familien der Glieder des Senats, welche eine Familienaristokratie bildeten, Gegensatz der Demokraten; 3) in Constantinopel ein Soldatencorps, Anfangs angesehen, später als Aufwärter der Soldaten dienende Troßbuben; 4) (Optimaten), die Vornehmeren u. Mächtigeren eines Staates.
