Legatĭo

Legatĭo (röm. Ant.), 1) das Amt eines Legatus; bes. 2) Gesandtschaft, s.d. L. libĕra, war das Vorrecht der Senatoren, nach erhaltener Erlaubniß des Senats, eine Reise in Privatangelegenheiten als eine Gesandtschaft zu betrachten, so daß sie überall freie Beköstigung, unentgeldliche Beförderung etc. erhielten, wie ein wirklicher Gesandter. L. votiva dagegen war, wenn ein Senator die Vergünstigung[215] erhielt, als Gesandter zur Erfüllung eines Gelübdes in eine Provinz zu reisen.
