Bithoor

Bithoor: Bithoor, Stadt im britischen District Cawnpore der nordwestlichen Provinzen des Anglo-Indischen Reichs, mit 13,580 Ew., am rechten Gangesufer, 2¹/₂ Meilen von Cawnpore, ist ein Hauptsitz des Brahmacultus, besitzt viele Hindutempel u. mehre Ghats (große Treppen), welche zum heiligen Strome herabführen. Alljährlich im Vollmond des Monats Ayrahayaua (November – December) wird hier ein großes Fest gefeiert. Bis 1851 bildete B. mit seiner nächsten Umgebung einen kleinen Lehnstaat (Jaghir), der jedoch nach dem Tode des Maharajah Bajee Row 1851 eingezogen wurde.
