Poenitentĭa (lat.), Buße. Poenitentiale (Pönitenzbuch), katholisches Lehrbuch über die Regeln der den bußfertigen Sündern aufzulegenden Bußen, um den Sünder mit Gott auszusöhnen; vgl. Amt der Schlüssel. Zur Zeit, wo die öffentliche Buße noch bestand, war es ein geistliches Strafgesetzbuch; vgl. Kirchenstrafen. Obgleich solcher Bücher mehre u. verschiedene vorhanden sind, so war doch das bedeutendste das P. romanum.
