Santals

Santals (d.h. Bewohner des Niederlandes), einheimischer Volksstamm in Ostindien, welcher hauptsächlich den District Bhagulpore (Provinz Bahar in der Präsidentschaft Bengalen) bewohnt u. wesentlich von den Hindus verschieden ist. Die S. sind klein, aber gut gebaut, haben dicke Lippen u. hervorstehende Backenknochen, breite Nase u. wenig Bart; sie sind fleißige Ackerbauer, intelligent u. haben keine Casteneintheilung. Ihr Cultus ist dem Bramaismus wenig verwandt u. besteht in Gebeten, Opfern u. religiösen Tänzen, welche sie meist in trunkenem Zustande ausführen; regiert werden sie von Pergumiten (Bezirks-) u. Mangi (Ortsvorstehern).
