Tinevelly, 1) District der britisch-vorderindischen Präsidentschaft Madras, hat 259 QM. u. 1,280,000[606] Ew.; die Küste ist flach, der Boden zum Theil sehr fruchtbar, namentlich für Anbau von Reis u. Baumwolle; 2) Hauptstadt hier, links am Tschindinthura, mit Brücke über denselben, hat Baumwollenweberei, Handel, 2000 Ew. u. ist Waffenplatz der Briten; dabei ein heiliger Berg mit vielen Tempeln, Wallfahrtsort.
