Atherōma (gr.), kleine rundliche Geschwulst, die ohne Zeichen von Entzündung entsteht, s. Brei- u. Balggeschwulst. Daher Atheromatös, breiartig, breiartige Masse enthaltend; Atheromatöser Proceß, krankhafter Vorgang an der inneren Haut der Blutgefäße,[886] in Zerfallen der inneren Haut zu erbsenbreiähnlicher Masse bestehend; nachdem diese Masse weggespült worden ist, entsteht eine Art Geschwür in der Wand der Ader, u. leicht ist damit der Andrang zu einem Aneurysma gegeben. Zuweilen bleibt jene Masse sitzen u. verhärtet u. verkalkt.
