Carĭtas

Carĭtas (lat.), 1) Liebe, Menschenliebe; 2) in Klöstern außerordentliche Mahlzeit, für Arme bestimmt; 3) jede Erholung, die außer den gewöhnlichen Mahlzeiten die Mönche genossen; 4) so v.w. Agape; 5) Grundstücke u. andere Güter, welche den Klöstern geschenkt wurden; 6) überhaupt jedes Geschenk für Geistliche; 7) in der bildenden Kunst Darstellung der Mutterliebe als allegorische Figur od. als eine Mutter mit Kindern. Davon erhielten alle Genrebilder, welche eine derartige Gruppe darstellen, die italienische Bezeichnung Carita.
