Cleland, John, geb. 1707, ging sehr jung als Consul nach Smyrna, von da nach Indien, das er wegen einer Zwistigkeit mit den Behörden bald verlassen mußte, lebte dann in England in großem Elende, gerieth wegen Schulden in Hast; erhielt endlich von Lord John Grenville eine Pension von 200 Pfd. Sterl. u. st. 23. Jan. 1789. Er schr. den berüchtigten Roman: The woman of pleasure, später: Der Mann von Ehre.
