Club (engl.), 1) Zeche, welche jeder Einzelne bezahlt; 2) geschlossene Gesellschaft, welche sich entweder zu geselligem Vergnügen od. zur Berathung über Kunst- u. wissenschaftliche Gegenstände etc., od. auch zur Discutirung von Staatsangelegenheiten (Politische Clubs), an einem bestimmten Orte versammeln. Letztere entstanden in England, gingen aber bald nach Frankreich über, wo sie während der Revolution sehr wichtig wurden u. wesentlich auf sie einwirkten; s. bes. Jakobiner. In Deutschland wurden die politischen C-s 1793 streng verboten. In den Jahren 1848 u. 1849 bildeten sich wieder zahlreiche C-s in Frankreich u. Deutschland. Clubist, Mitglied eines C-s, bes. des Jakobiner-C-s 1791–94.
