Foulahs

Foulahs (spr. Fuhlas), Volk im Innern Senegambiens u. Guineas, gleichen Stammes mit den nach dem Sudan ausgewanderten Fellatah (s.d.), hat seinen Ursprung aus der kleinen am oberen Senegal gelegenen Landschaft Foulahdre, d.h. Foulahland, u. herrscht gegenwärtig in dem zu der großen Landschaft Fouta Dhiallon gehörenden Reiche Timbo, dessen frühere Bewohner die F. unterworfen haben. Die F. sind klein von Wuchs, haben eine rauhe Sprache u. häßliche Gesichtsbildung, zeigen jedoch Muth, Kraft u. Thätigkeit, treiben lebhaften Handel u. auch Ackerbau. Ihre Hautfarbe ist heller als bei den übrigen Volksstämmen dieser Regionen, sie haben langes, nicht wolliges Haupthaar; ihre Religion ist meist die muhammedanische.
