Oglethorpe (spr. Ogelßhörp), James Edward, geb. 1698 in London; trat in die königliche Garde u. nahm als Adjutant des Prinzen Eugen an dessen Feldzuge in Deutschland Theil; 1732 ging er mit 100 Ansiedlern nach Nordamerika, wo ihm der König einen Landstrich im Süden von Carolina, die nachmalige Colonie Georgia (s.d.), anwies. Er kam, nach einigen Mißhelligkeiten mit den Spaniern, 1743 nach England zurück, machte als Generalmajor den Feldzug gegen die schottischen Rebellen mit u. st. 1785.
