Labrax, 1) so v.w. Feilenfisch; 2) Gattung der Barsche, Kiemendeckel mit zwei Dornen u. Schuppen, Zunge rauh; sonst dem Flußbarsch gleich; Art: Wolfsbarsch (L. lupus Cuv., Perca labrax L.), 3 Fuß lang, bis 30 Pfund schwer, silberfarbig, wohlschmeckend, häufig im Mittelmeer; den Römern als Lupus, den Griechen als Labrax bekannt u. von ihnen geschätzt. Die Römer hielten die für wohlschmeckender, welche in Rom in der Tiber selbst, wo sie den vielen Unrath aus Abtritten fanden, gefangen wurden; Steinbarsch (L. lineatus, Perca saxatilis Bloch.), silberig, sieben braune Längsstreifen, bis 3 Fuß lang, 50 Pfund schwer; an der Küste von New York, wohlschmeckend, beliebt, häufig.
