Maranta (M. L.), Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Cannaceae, 1. Kl. 1. Ordn. L.; Arten: M. arundinacea, mit knolliger, weißgelblicher, das Arrow-root-mehl (s.d.) liefernder Wurzel; in Südamerika heimisch; M. allouya, in Südamerika; die nußgroßen Wurzelknollen liefern ebenfalls ein Stärkemehl, sind in Amerika als Rad. curcumae americanae officinell, werden auch gekocht od. gebraten genossen. M. indica Tussac., in Westindien, wohin sie aus Ostindien gebracht worden sein soll, liefert gleichfalls Arrow-root. M. arouma, aus deren sich leicht spaltenden Stängeln die Karaiben Korbarbeiten verfertigen. M. borussica, mit fast schwarzgrünen, mit weißen Bändern decorirten Blättern; M. pulchella, zwergartige Zierpflanze in Bahia, mit Blättern, welche von der Mittelrippe nach den Rändern hin mit dunkelsammtartigen Bändern geziert sind. Mehre Arten sind beliebte Gewächshauspflanzen.
