Baines (spr. Behns), Edward, geb. 1774 zu Ripon in Yorkshire, erlernte die Buchdruckerkunst in Leeds u. brachte 1801 den Leeds Mercury an sich, in welchem die liberalen Ansichten in Nordengland verbreitet wurden; 1833 für Leeds ins Unterhaus gewählt sprach er bes. für die Trennung der Kirche u. des Staates; 1841 trat er aus dem Parlament u. st. 3. Aug. 1848. Er schr.: Hist. of the wars of the French Revolution, 1814; Hist. of the reign of George III.; Hist. and gazetter of the county of York, 1822 f.; Hist. and gaz. of Lankashire, 1826, n.A. 1836, 2 Bde.; Lebensbeschreibung von seinem Sohn Edward B., Lond. 1851; sein älterer Sohn ist Matthew Talbot B. (s.d.).
