Rest

Rest, 1) was von einer Sache übrig geblieben ist, so beim Ausschnitthandel die kleinen Stücke, welche von einem ganzen Stücke beim Verkauf übrig bleiben; 2) was beim Subtrahiren übrig bleibt; 3) Quadratischer R., der Überschuß einer Quadratzahl über das möglich größte Vielfache einer anderen Zahl. Wenn diese andere Zahl eine Primzahl ist, so kommen dem quadratischen Reste, welche aus der natürlichen Zahlenreihe entstehen, merkwürdige Eigenschaften zu; 3) eine verfallene, aber noch nicht bezahlte Schuld od. Abgabe; daher Restant, der eine Zahlung schuldig ist, u. Resten (Restiren), so eine Zahlung schuldig sein; 4) so v.w. Spreu.
