Saponification (v. lat.), 1) Verseifung, der Proceß, durch welchen aus Fetten u. fetten Ölen durch Einwirkung ätzender Alkalien Seife gebildet wird; 2) Verwandlung in eine seifenartige Masse, wie z.B. Leichen saponisicirt werden, welche in weichen, feuchten Thonkalk liegen, wodurch der Zutritt der atmosphärischen Luft abgehalten wird.
