Sirhind

Sirhind, 1) ehemals District im britischen Vorderindien, zwischen Himalaja im Nordosten, Dschumna im Südosten, Wüste, Tharr im Süd westen, Sutledsch im Nordwesten; ein Gebiet von etwa 800 QM., welches gegenwärtig zu einem Theile als Cis Sutledsch Gebiet unmittelbar unter dem britischen Generalgouverneur steht (382 QM.), zum andern Theile (die Staaten der Malua-Sikhs) mit den Fürstenthümern Puttiala, Jind, Furidkote, Narba, Munimedschia u. m. a. zum mittelbaren Gebiet der Präsidentschaft Bengalen gehört; 2) Stadt in dem Sikh-Fürstenthum Puttiala, ehemals Hauptstadt der ganzen Landschaft S., war im 14. Jahrh. blühende Handelsstadt, ist jetzt aber unbedeutend. Von hier sollen die ersten Seidenraupen nach Europa (Constantinopel) gekommen sein.
