Stockton (spr. Stockt'n), 1) S. upon Tees (spr. S. öpon Tihs), Hafenstadt in der englischen Grafschaft Durham, am Tees, welcher 31/2 Stunde davon in die Nordsee mündet, einer der Knotenpunkte des Eisenbahnnetzes zwischen Newcastle, Durham, York u. Leeds, Fabriken in Segeltuch u. anderen Schiffsgeräthen, Schiffbau, Maschinenbau, Handel mit Blei, Alaun, Getreide, Fischen etc.; 10,000 Ew. 2) Hauptstadt der Grafschaft San Joaquin im Staate Californien (Nordamerika), am Stockton Channel, welcher für Dampfboote schiffbar ist u. 11/2 Stunden von hier in den San Joaquin River mündet. S. wurde 1844 angelegt, 1846 wieder verlassen, 1848 wieder aufgenommen u. kam dann wegen der umliegenden Goldminen rasch empor, Hospital; 1853_: 8000 Ew.
