Betŭlin

Betŭlin, von Lowitz 1788 in der Oberrinde der Birke als eigene Substanz ausgeschieden, von John 1811 als eigener Pflanzenstoff aufgestellt. Man erhält ihn durch Ausschwitzen aus, bis zum Dämpfen erhitzter Birkenrinde, als ein Gespinnst von weißer Farbe u. solcher Zartheit, daß 10 Grau den Raum eines Pfundglases ausfüllen. Wasser u. Alkalien lösen es nicht auf, wohl aber concentrirte Schwefelsäure, Weingeist, Äther, fette u. ätherische Öle. In verschlossenem Gefäß läßt es sich sublimiren, wird aber leicht zersetzt; in der Wärme schmilzt[696] es u. verdampft mit angenehmem Geruch; am Licht entzündet es sich.
