Brownson (spr. Brauns'n), Orestes A., geb. 1802 in der Grafschaft Windsor im Staate Vermont; widmete sich der Theologie, wurde presbyterianischer Prediger, dann Unitarier, später Deist u. trat endlich zur Katholischen Kirche über. Er schr.: New views of Christianity, Society and the Church, 1836, u. Charles Elwood or the infidel converted (eine metaphysische Novelle, in welcher er die Geschichte seiner eigenen religiosen Erfahrungen zu Grunde legte), 1840; er redigirte 1838–1843 das Boston Quarterly Review u. seit 1844 Brownson's Quaterly Review.
