Canna (C. L., Blumenrohr), Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Cannaceae, 1. Ordn. 1. Kl. L. Arten zahlreich in der heißen Zone: C. indica, mit rothen, auch gelben Blumen; C. glauca (angustifolia), mit blaugrünen Blättern u. rosenrothen Blumen; wegen ihrer schönen Blüthen u. ihres schönen Baues bei uns beliebte Zierpflanze unserer Gewächshäuser, einige auch im Freien ausdauernd, wie z.B. C. indica; sie erreichen eine Höhe von 6–20 Fuß, sind krautartig, mit oft mehreren Fuß langen Blättern, die stark gerippt sind, u. schönen Blüthen in Trauben od. Rispen. Der Wurzelstock mehrerer Arten dient als Heilmittel; von C. edulis s. rubricaulis, sowie von C. lutea u. C. paniculata wird er gegessen; C. indica enthält in der frischen Wurzel 31/2 in der getrockneten 151/4 Proc. Stärkemehl, das dem Arrowroot gleichkommt. Die Samen dienen als Kaffeesurrogat u. mehrere färben schön purpurroth, doch nicht dauerhaft.
