Duckworth (spr. Döckwors), Sir John Thomas, geb. 1740 in Beretherad in der Grafschaft Surrey; trat 1760 in die Marine, wurde 1780 Schiffslieutenant, befehligte 1794 als Capitän unter Howard in der Seeschlacht gegen den französischen Admiral Villaret, begleitete 1795 eine englische Flotte mit Landungstruppen nach Ostindien, trug 1798 viel zur Eroberung der Insel Minorca bei u. erhielt den Oberbefehl über Jamaica; er folgte 1800 auf Lord Hugh Seymour in dem Oberbefehl unter dem Winde, nahm mit dem General Trigge die dänischen Inseln, wurde Contreadmiral der Weißen u. 1803 der Blauen Flagge u. nahm den französischen General Rochambeau, als die Schwarzen in Domingo sich empörten u. dieser sich nur ihm zu ergeben verlangte, gefangen.[375] 1806 nahm er einen Theil der französischen die mißlungenen Unternehmungen auf Constantinopel (vgl. Dardanellen), wurde 1810 Commandant auf New-Foundland, 1813 Baronet, 1815 Commandant in Plymouth u. st. 1817.
