Ossat

Ossat (spr. Ossa), Arnold d'O., geb. 1536 in der Diöces von Auch, studirte die Rechte u. wurde Parlamentsadvocat in Paris, wo er Freund u. Vertheidiger des Ramus wurde; ging 1574 nach Rom, wo er erst bei der französischen Gesandtschaft angestellt war u. nachher selbst Gesandter wurde u. den Königen Heinrich III. u. IV. wichtige Dienste leistete, namentlich Letzterm die Entbindung von dem Banne erwirkte; er wurde 1599 Cardinal u. st. 1604 in Rom. Die Sammlung seiner Briefe an den französischen Hof (bes. wichtig wegen der Aufschlüsse über die päpstliche Politik u. die kirchlichen Verhältnisse Frankreichs im 16. Jahrh.) u.a. herausgegeben von Amelot de la Houssaye, Par. 1697, 2 Bde.
