Kairwan (Kairuan), Stadt im Süden von Tunis, die, bei der Eroberung von Nordafrika durch die Araber im 7. Jahrh. angelegt, mehrere Jahrhunderte hindurch die Hauptstadt des muhammedanischen Afrika's war u. auch jetzt noch wegen ihrer großen Moschee für eine heilige Stadt gilt, hat ansehnlichen Handel u. zählt 15.000 Ew.
