Mantell, geb. zu Lewes in Sussex in England, studirte Naturwissenschaften u. beschäftigte sich vorzugsweise mit Geologie; 1812 begann er die große Petrefactensammlung anzulegen, welche sich jetzt im Britischen Museum befindet; er st. 10. Nov. 1852 in London. Seine Arbeiten aus dem Gebiete der Paläontologie sind in mehren englischen naturwissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften veröffentlicht.
