Lesley (spr. Lesle), Joh., geb 1527 in Schottland; war Canonicus in Aberdeen u. Murray; führte 1561 die Königin Marie von Schottland nach England u. wurde nach seiner Rückkehr Senator, Geheimer Rath, Abt von Lundors u. Bischof von Roß. Bei der Gefangenschaft Marias in England trat er als deren Vertheidiger auf u. entwarf, um sie zu retten, den Plan einer Heirath zwischen ihr u. dem Herzog von Norfolk, wurde jedoch verrathen u. auf der Insel Ely, dann im Tower gefangen gehalten. 1573 frei gelassen, ging er nach dem Continent, um für Maria Hülfe zu suchen; 1579 Generalvicar des Bischofs von Rouen, wurde er zweimal gefangen gesetzt, kaufte sich aber stets durch eine Ranzion frei u. st. 1587 in einem Kloster bei Brüssel; er schr. u.a.: De orgine, moribus et rebus gestis Scotorum, Rouen 1578; De titulo et jure Mariae, Scotorum reginae, quo Angliae successionem sibi vindicat, Rheims 1560 u. m. a.
