Ballarat

Ballarat (Ballaarat), Stadt in der Grafschaft Grenville der englischen Colonie Victoria in Südaustralien, in dem gleichnamigen Thale am Fuße des Pyrenäengebirges, ist durch eine Eisenbahn über Geelong mit Melbourne verbunden. In der Gegend befindet sich am Mount Baningong eins der wichtigsten, im Oct. 1851 entdeckten Goldlager der Colonie, in welchem Goldklumpen bis zu 136 Pfd. Schwere gefunden wurden. Das Gold von B., von dottergelber Farbe, gilt für das feinste der Erde. Bald nach der Entdeckung des Goldfeldes wurde hier eine Zeltstadt errichtet u. 1854 zählte der Bezirk bereits über 16,600 Ew.
