Elphinstone

Elphinstone, Mountstuart, Sohn des Grafen E., geb. 1778, trat 1796 in die bengalische Abtheilung in Britisch-Indien, wurde Gehülfe des Obersten Close, Residenten am Hofe von Peschawer, u. begleitete 1803 A. Wellesley in den Mahrattenkrieg; darnach wurde er Resident in Nagpur u. 1808 zum Gesandten in Afghanistan ernannt, aber seine Gesandtschaft endigte mit der Vertreibung Schah Schudscha's aus Afghanistan, 1809, u. er wurde nun Resident am Hofe des Peischwa in Punah; nach der Einverleibung des Staates des Peischwa, 1818, führte er dort die neue Ordnung der Dinge ein u. wurde 1819 Statthalter von Bengalen; seit 1827 lebte er in England u. st. 20. Nov. 1859 auf seinem Gute Hookwood Park in Surrey. Er schr. Bericht über Kabul.
