Shrop (spr. Schropp), 1) (Shropshire, Salop), Grafschaft in England, an Wales grenzend; 61,8 QM., zum Theil gebirgig, mit schönen Thälern (Colebrookdale), der nordöstliche Theil fruchtbar u. bes. zum Ackerbau geeignet, der südwestliche rauh, mehr zur Viehzucht geeignet; bewässert von der Saverne (mit dem Teme, Tearne u.a.) u. von einigen Kanälen (Ellesmere, Shrop), bringt Getreide, Gemüse, Hülsenfrüchte, Obst, Holz, Eisen, Blei, Steinkohlen, Thon etc.; man zieht viel Vieh (Schafe, mit Käsegewinn), treibt ansehnlichen Bergbau u. Industrie, bes. in Eisenwaaren etc.; 1851: 245,019 Ew.; Hauptstadt Shrewsbury.; 2) Kanal daselbst, 11/2 Ml. lang, hat 467 Fuß Fall.
