Skarpanto

Skarpanto: Skarpanto (Skarpathos, Karpatho, Koje), Insel im Liwa Rhodos des türkischen Ejalets Dschesairi, zwischen Rhodos u. Kreta gelegen, 4 QM., ist sehr gebirgig u. wenig angebaut, hat mehre, aber nur unbedeutende Häfen u. etwa 5000 Ew., welche in mehrern Dörfern zerstreut wohnen. S. ist das alte Karpathos u. hat noch mancherlei Alterthümer aufzuweisen. Auch auf der im Norden von S. gelegenen kleinen Insel Saria finden sich alte [164] Trümmer. Das umliegende Meer führte sonst davon den Namen Karpathisches Meer.
