Molesworth, Sir William, stammte aus einer alten Familie aus Cornwallis, welche unter König Wilhelm III. die Baronetwürde erhielt, wurde 23. Mai 1810 zu Camberwell in Surrey geboren, studirte in Cambridge u. Edinburg, machte bis 1831 die Tour durch Europa, wurde 1833 in Cornwallis u. 1837 in Leeds ins Parlament gewählt u. machte sich bes. 1837 u. 38 durch seine Reden über das Transportationssystem u. über Colonien bekannt; 1841 zog er sich als Whig zurück, trat aber 1845 wieder für Southwark ins Parlament; unter Aberdeen wurde er Ende 1852 Minister der öffentlichen Arbeiten u. nach Russels Abdankung im Juli 1855 Staatssecretär der Colonien, starb aber schon 22. Oct. 1855 in London. Er schr. Mehres für die Westminster Review, deren Mitbesitzer er war, u. gab Hobbes Werke, 1839 ff., 11 Bde. heraus.
