White (spr. Ueit), 1) Jos. Blanko, geb. um 1775 in Sevilla; stammt aus einer irländischen Familie, wurde Prediger an der Hofkapelle in Sevilla[153] u. bald darauf Synodalexaminator des Cadixer Sprengels. Er stieß schon früh auf Zweifel an den Grundlagen des Katholicismus u. benutzte 1810 die Annäherung der Franzosen, um sich nach England zu begeben. Hier gab er die Zeitschrift El Español heraus, trat 1813 zur Anglicanischen Kirche über u. studirte seit 1814 in Oxford Theologie. Er blieb fortan in England u. beschäftigte sich mit literarischen Arbeiten, welche er zum Theil pseudonym als Leuvadio Doblado herausgab. Er schr.: Preparatory observations on the study of religion, Oxf. 1817; Lettres from Spain, Lond. 1822; Practical and internal evidence against catholicism, ebd. 1825; The poor man's preservative against popery, ebd. 1826 (Auszug aus der vorigen Schrift); A letter to Charles Butter, ebd. 1826; war 1823–25 Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Variedates, ó mensangero de Londres. 2) Henry Kirke, geb. 21. Aug. 1785 in Nottingham, war Anfangs Fleischer-, dann Strumpfwirkerlehrling, trat später bei einem Advocaten in die Lehre, lernte hier auf eigene Hand die klassischen u. mehre neuere Sprachen, wurde Mitarbeiter am Monthly Mirror u. studirte seit 1803 in Cambridge, starb aber bereits 19. October 1806. Eine Sammlung seiner Gedichte gab er 1803 heraus; sein dichterischer Nachlaß, von Southey 1807 herausgegeben, erlebte viele Auflagen. 3) Charles, Sohn eines Gouverneurs in Indien, geb. 16. Januar 1793 in Shropshire, trat sehr jung als Unterlieutenant in das Garderegiment Coldstream u. diente 1809 in Spanien u. Portugal, er wurde beim Sturm auf Ciudad Rodrigo 1812 Capitän u. bei dem von Badajoz Capitän erster Klasse u. dem Generalstabe Wellingtons aggregirt. 1812 kehrte er nach England zurück, wurde Generaladjutant beim General Williams u. 1814 beim Herzog von Cambridge, welchen er nach Hannover begleitete, ging 1815 als Major mit seinem Regiment nach Frankreich u. wurde darnach zum Obersten befördert. Er nahm 1827 den Abschied u. lebte auf dem Continent in Aachen, machte 1830–33 den Unterhändler in den belgischen Angelegenheiten u. hielt sich später bes. in Berlin auf.
