Witsius (Wittsius, Wits), Hermann, geb. 12. Febr. 1636 in Enkhuyzen (Nordholland), studirte seit 1653 in Gröningen, Leyden u. Utrecht Theologie, wurde 1656 Prediger in Westwoud, 1661 in Wormeren, 1666 in Goesen u. 1668 in Leeuwarden; 1675 ging er als Professor u. Prediger nach Franeker u. 1680 nach Utrecht; 1685 begleitete er die niederländische Gesandtschaft nach London, wurde 1698 Professor in Leyden u. starb hier 22. Octbr. 1708. Selbst zu den gemäßigten Anhängern des Coccejus gehörend, suchte er zwischen den orthodoxen Voetianern u. den föderalistischen Coccejanern zu vermitteln; er schr. u.a.: Oeconomia foederis, Leeuw. 1685, 2. A. 1693; Judaeus christianizans; Exercitationes in Symbolum apost. et Orationem dominicam; Aegyptiaca; Praxis christianismi; Lis Domini cum vinea sua. Vgl. Heringa, De Hermanno Witsio, Amst. 1861.
