Bancroft (spr. Bännkrost), George, geb. 1800 zu Worchester in Massachusetts, studirte zu Cambridge, Göttingen u. Berlin, bereiste Europa, gründete nach seiner Rückkehr die Round-Hill-Schule zu Northampton, widmete sich indeß bald der politischen Schriftstellerei, ward Collector der Vereinigten-Staaten-Zölle in Boston, unter Polk 1845 Marineminister u. von 1846–49 Gesandter der Vereinigten Staaten in London. Er schr.: Hist. of the United-States of Northamerica, Bost. 1834–40, 3 Bde. (deutsch nach der 9. Aufl. von Kretzschmar, Lpz. 1845); Hist. of the Revolution of Northamerica. ebd. 1850 ff.
