Chaonĭa (a. Geogr.), Land in Epiros zwischen dem Akrokeraunischen Gebirge u. dem Flusse Thyamis, bewohnt von den Chanes, einem der 4 Hauptvölker von Epiros, wahrscheinlich Pelasgerstamm, die jetzigen Kimariolen. Es sollte benannt sein nach Chaon, Bruder des Helenos, der mit Pyrrhos in ein freiwilliges Exil nach Epiros ging, um dadurch[862] das Aufhören einer Pest zu bewirken, nach Andern von Helenos auf der Jagd erschossen worden sein.
