Chunar

Chunar (Chunargurh), Stadt u. Festung im District Mirzapoor der nordwestlichen Provinzen des britisch-indischen Reichs am rechten Gangesufer; 11,058 Ew.; die Festung, auf einem steilen Sandsteinfelsen, beherrscht den Strom, hat 5000 Fuß im Umfang u. umschließt außer einem massigen alten Hindupalast eine Citadelle, die Wohnungen der Offiziere u. Soldaten, ein Staatsgefängniß etc. Am östlichen Abhange liegt die Stadt der Eingeborenen mit durchaus steinernen Häusern, u. hinter denselben weiter abwärts die Wohnungen u. Gärten der Europäer, nebst einer hübschen englischen Kirche u. einer katholischen Kapelle. Außerhalb der Stadt liegt das schöne Grab des heiligen Kasim-Soliman. Ch. ist eine der bedeutenderen Invalidenstationen für die europäischen Truppen; 1768 wurde es der Ostindischen Compagnie abgetreten.
