County

County (spr. Kaunti, d. i. Grafschaft, ursprünglich das Besitzthum eines Grafen [Count], officielle Abkürzung: Co.), in England u. dessen Colonien, sowie in den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika eine politische Eintheilung, ungefähr den preußischen Provinzen od. französischen Departements entsprechend. In England (dort auch Shire genannt) hat jede C. ihren Sheriff (obersten Administrativ- u. Justizbeamten) u. ihren Lordlieutenant (welcher zugleich Commandant der Miliz ist; sonst fast reine Ehrenstelle); in den Vereinigten Staaten, welche mit Ausnahme von Südcarolina (zerfällt in Districte) u. Louisiana (zerfällt in Kirchspiele, Parishes) ebenfalss sämmtlich in C-s eingetheilt werden, hat jede derselben ihren County Seat (Sitz der Verwaltungsbehörden) od. Capital (Hauptstadt) mit einem County Honse.
