Novellae

Novellae (sc. leges s. constitutiones), 1) ein neues Gesetz, bes. ein solches, welches als Nachtrag u. Ergänzung zu einem frühern erscheint; namentlich 2) diejenigen Gesetze, welche von den Römischen Kaisern nach Erlaß des von Kaiser Theodosius II. u. Valentinian III. im Jahre 438 publicirten Codex Theodosianus veröffentlicht wurden. Man theilt sie jetzt gewöhnlich in N. antejustinianeae, welche in die Zeit von Theodosius II. bis Kaiser Justinian fallen, u. N. justinianeae, welche Justinian selbst seiner Revision des Codex Theodosianus noch folgen ließ, u. welche gegenwärtig den vierten Haupttheil des Corpus juris civilis (s.d.i. B) d) ff.) bilden. Antejustinianeische N. gibt es namentlich von den Kaisern Valentinian III., Marcian, Majorian, Severus u. Anthemius. Vgl. Biener, Geschichte der Novellen Justinians, Berl. 1824.
