Ocean (v. gr. Okeănos), 1) s. Okeanos; 2) das Weltmeer, im Gegensatz zu dem Binnenmeer, im Alterthum das Meer über den Säulen des Hercules; 3) jetzt die einzelnen Theile des Weltmeeres, z.B. der Atlantische O. etc., bes. aber die Südsee od. der Stille O.; daher Oceanien (s.d.) u. Oceanische Sprachen, so v.w. Südseesprachen.
