Hirpīni

Hirpīni (a. Geogr.), Zweig der Samniten, zwischen den Frentanern, Samnitern, Lucanien u. Apulien, in der jetzigen neapolitanischen Provinz Principato ultra. In ihrem Gebiete lagen Äculanum, Compsa, Aquilonia, Equus Tuticus. Sie machten mit den Carthagern gemeinschaftliche Sache gegen die Römer, wurden zwar von diesen geschlagen u. unterworfen, betheiligten sich aber doch wieder an dem Bundesgenossenkriege, wurden aber jetzt besiegt, 89 v. Chr. Äculanum genommen u. sie wieder unterworfen.
