Indian Territory

Indian Territory (Gebiet der freien Indianer), dasjenige Gebiet der Vereinigten Staaten, welches von dem Gouvernement derselben den verschiedenen Indianerstämmen, die 1830 aus den Staaten östlich vom Mississippi nach dem Westen zurückgedrängt wurden, zum dauernden Wohnsitz angewiesen worden ist; es grenzt im Norden an das Gebiet (Territory) Kansas, im Osten an Missouri u. Arkansas, im Süden an Texas, im Westen[854] an Texas u. New Mexico, u. erstreckt sich von 33° 30' bis 37° nördl. Breite u. von 76°30' bis 82' 20' westl. Länge (von Ferro); es umfaßte ursprünglich 187,171 englische (8522 deutsche) QM., seitdem aber 1854 das gegen 120,000 englische (über 5000 deutsche) QM. große Territorium Kansas davon abgetrennt wurde, nur noch ungefähr 67,000 englische (über 3000 deutsche) QM.; im Südosten gebirgig durch die Ozark Mountains, im Übrigen eine große fruchtbare Ebene, größtentheils Prairien, fast nur an den Flüssen bewaldet; Hauptflüsse: Arkansas River (mit dem Cimaron u. Canadian Rivers), Washita River, Red River (Grenzfluß gegen Süden); Klima mild u. gesund; die Bevölkerung steht unter einer besonderen Abtheilung des Gouvernements der Vereinigten Staaten, dem Indian Department, u. wurde 1853 von dieser Behörde auf 400,000 Köpfe angeschlagen; mehrere der größeren u. civilisirteren Stämme haben geregelte Verfassungen unter gewählten Häuptlingen u. treiben Ackerbau u. Viehzucht; die bedeutenderen Stämme sind: Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, Cherokees, Delawares, Eutaws, Seneces u. Seminolen (s.d. a.), vgl. Indianer. Zur Aufrechthaltung ihrer Autorität hat die Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten eine Anzahl Militärstationen errichtet, die bedeutendsten sind: Fort Towson am Red River, Fort Washita am Washita River, Fort Gibson am Arkansas River. Das I. T. bildet einen Theil des großen Landstriches, welcher als Louisiana Tract 1803 unter Präsident Jefferson von Frankreich abgekauft wurde u. erstreckte sich anfänglich bis zum 40° nördl. Breite, doch wurde 1854 der größere Theil (nördlich vom 37° nördl. Breite) davon getrennt, aus diesem das Gebiet (Territory) Kansas gebildet u. dadurch der ursprüngliche Flächenraum von 8522 QM. auf 3000 QM. reducirt.
