Libya

Libya (a. Geogr.), 1) der den Alten bekannte Theil Afrika's, u. zwar bei Ptolemäos getheilt in: L. exterior, welches die Länder Mauritanien, Numidien,[342] Provinz Africa, Syrtica, Cyrenaica, Marmarica, Ägypten u. Äthiopien begriff; u. L. interior, der übrige Theil, welcher an die vorigen Länder, so wie im Westen an das Atlantische Meer grenzte u. im Süden von unbestimmter Grenze war; darin der See Libya, welcher mit einem Nebenfluß od. Arm des Niger in Verbindung stand; daher dann 2) so v.w. ganz Afrika; später 3) die Nordküste zwischen Ägypten u. den Syrten, daher das Meer längs dieser Küste von Kreta bis zu den Syrten das Libycum mare hieß. Libyer mit Phöniciern vermischt, Libyphönīkes, wohnten in Africa propria am Bagradas, südlich von Carthago. Endlich, nach der Eintheilung Afrikas in Nomen war L. 4) (Libycus Nomos), der Bezirk zwischen Ägypten u. Marmarica, s.u. Marmarica; das Grenzgebirg nach Ägypten hin hieß das Libysche Gebirg (jetzt Dschebel Silsili).
