Phlogiston

Phlogiston (gr.), wurde zuerst von G. E. Stahl als eigener Grundstoff der Körper, worauf zunächst die Fähigkeit zu brennen beruhe, aufgestellt. Obgleich nur Hypothese, wurde das P. doch eine Zeitlang eine der Hauptgrundlagen der Chemie, bis nach Entdeckung des Sauerstoffs u. seiner Beziehungen, nicht nur zum Verbrennen, sondern auch zu mehren physischen u. chemischen Vorgängen, man allmälig völlig von dieser Theorie zurückkam; vgl. Chemie B) d).
