Massua (Massaua, Basé), kleine Insel im Rothen Meere, hart an der Küste der Landschaft Samhara (Habesch) mit der gleichnamigen Stadt, welche der wichtigste Handelsplatz für Habesch ist, einen Hafen u. etwa 5000 Ew. hat. Die Insel steht seit 1814 unter türkischer Oberherrschaft, der Gouverneur ist dem Pascha von Dschidda untergeordnet; Die Stadt hat eine türkische Besatzung von einigen hundert Mann u. es residirt daselbst ein französischer Consul.
