Steevens (spr. Stihw'ns), George, geb. 1736 in Stepney; studirte zu Cambridge. Sein Streit mit Malone u. große Sonderbarkeiten machten ihn zum Menschenfeind; er st. 1800 zu Hampstead nach langer Zurückgezogenheit. Er ist einer der vorzüglichsten Commentatoren Shakespeares u. ließ 1766 20 Stücke dieses Dichters mit Bemerkungen in 4 Bdn. drucken u. gab mit Johnson Shakespeares sämmtliche Theaterstücke zuerst in 10, 1793 in 15 Bdn. heraus.
