Tillotson

Tillotson (spr. Tillots'n), John, geb. 1630 in Sowerby u. getauft zu Halifax in der Grafschaft York, studirte seit 1647 in Cambridge, wurde 1663 Prediger in Lincoln u. bald darauf an der Lorenzkirche in London u. 1691 Erzbischof von Canterbury u. zugleich Geheimer Rath des Königs; er st. 22. Novbr. 1694 in Lambeth. Seiner theologischen Richtung nach gehörte er zu den Latitudinariern; als Prediger machte er dadurch Epoche, daß er statt der pedantischen Methode der Hochkirche u. der formlosen Rederei der Puritaner die nüchterne, reflectirende, wohlstylisirte Weise in der Kanzelrede einführte, welche auch in Deutschland, Frankreich u. Holland Nachahmer fand. Seine Predigten (Sermons), Lond. 1704, 14 Bde., 1757, 13 Bde.
